The Black Walnut Tree


My mother and I debate:

we could sell

the black walnut tree

to the lumberman,

and pay off the mortgage.

Likely some storm anyway

will churn down its dark boughs,

smashing the house. We talk

slowly, two women trying

in a difficult time to be wise.

Roots in the cellar drains,

I say, and she replies

that the leaves are getting heavier

every year, and the fruit

harder to gather away.

But something brighter than money

moves in our blood–an edge

sharp and quick as a trowel

that wants us to dig and sow.

So we talk, but we don't do

anything. That night I dream

of my fathers out of Bohemia

filling the blue fields

of fresh and generous Ohio

with leaves and vines and orchards.

What my mother and I both know

is that we'd crawl with shame

in the emptiness we'd made

in our own and our fathers' backyard.

So the black walnut tree

swings through another year

of sun and leaping winds,

of leaves and bounding fruit,

and, month after month, the whip-

crack of the mortgage.

검은 호두나무


엄마와 나는 의견을 나누었다:

우리가 검은 호두나무를

나무꾼에게

팔아,

대출금을 갚아도 될는지.

그나저나 어떤 폭풍이

까만 나뭇가지들을 마구 휘저으며,

집을 부서버릴 것만 같다. 우리는 천천히

이야기를 나누었고, 두 여자는 현명하기엔

너무 어려운 시간을 겪고 있다.

내가,

지하실 배수관에 나무 뿌리가 있어,

라고 말하자, 엄마는

매년 나뭇잎들이

점점 많아져서, 열매를 모으기가 어렵구나,

라고 답한다.

하지만 돈보다 더 밝은 어떤 것이

우리의 혈관 속에 움직인다-우리가

땅을 파 씨를 뿌리기 원하는

모종삽처럼 뾰족하고 재빠른

칼날.

그래서 이야기를 나누었지만, 우리는 아무것도

하지 않는다. 그날 밤 나는

보헤미아에서 선조들이 나오는 꿈을 꾸었다

맑고 관대한 오하이오의

새파란 평야를 채우며

나뭇잎들과 포도나무, 그리고 과수원들로.

엄마와 내가 둘 다 깨달은 건

우리가 우리 스스로 그리고 선조들의 뒷마당에서

만들어낸 공허함을

부끄러워하며 기어다닐 것이다.

그래서 검은 호두나무는

또 다른 해의 태양과 뛰어 노니는 바람,

나뭇잎과 통통 튀는 열매에

흔들리지만, 매달마다, 눈물로 얼룩진

대출금이 있다.









만약에 수능 영어에 문학이 들어가면 얼마나 무시무시해질까?하는 생각도 드네요

    수능영어에 문학 섞이면... 어후 끔찍. 스스로 수능영어공부하는건 불가능에 가깝겠네요

    영미문학 감수성을 기르세여~라면서 영어유치원, 영어초등학교때부터 영어동시 짓고 영어동요 부르는 사교육업계 판칠게 눈에 훤히 보인다
