안녕하세요, 영어 강사 구성연입니다. 예전에도 몇 번 자료 들고 찾아왔었는데 오늘도 여러분께 도움이 될까 싶어 공부용 자료와 함께 글을 쓰게 되었습니다. 오늘은 빈칸 문제를 해결하는 정석적인 방법에 대해서 얘기해볼까 합니다.^^

1. 2026학년도 대학수학능력시험 31번 빈칸 추론 문제(정답률 52%)

The early grain trade firms were active in both surplus-producing and food deficit regions, and these firms made it their business to know the state of supply and demand in both. Because this information was the key to their _______, these firms worked in relative secrecy, frequently built on family ties, trust, and loyalty. In addition, these firms were able to benefit from the rise of commodity exchanges and commodities futures markets that emerged in the mid-1800s. Agricultural markets are naturally unstable, due to changes in harvest size that result from variable weather patterns and other factors. Locking-in prices by buying and selling grain for future delivery helped these firms to minimize such risks. It made sense for the grain trading companies to manage their risks within a single firm that was operating in more than one country, rather than operating as independent national companies trading with each other. Their access to information in multiple markets enabled them to easily cover the risks associated with agricultural commodity trade.

작년 11월에 실시했던 수능 문제입니다. 정답률은 52% 정도 되었던 문제인데요, 여러분들 문제 풀어보셨나요? 그럼 답을 알려드리겠습니다.^^

답은 ① profitability가 정답 이었습니다. 근데 여기서 제가 주목한 것은 전국 수험생의 무려 34%가 2번의 unification을 답으로 하여 틀렸다는 점입니다. 그럼 왜 이 학생들은 2번을 답으로 해서 틀렸을까요? 아마 지문의 single 이라는 단어를 보고 그렇게 오답을 찾지 않았을까 조심스럽게 예측해봅니다. 그럼 그 친구들은 왜 single 이라는 단어만 보이고 그 뒤에 있던 multiple 이라는 단어는 보이지 않았던 걸까요? 글을 detail 하게 읽은 것이 아닌, 이미 single을 답이라고 인정해버리는 순간 아마 논리적으로 글을 읽으려고 하는 의지가 사라져서 생긴 문제일 수도 있습니다. 이 문제는 이렇게 푸는 것이 “정석적인” 방법입니다.

<첫 번째 포인트>

Because this information was the key to their _______, these firms worked in relative secrecy, frequently built on family ties, trust, and loyalty. In addition, these firms were able to benefit from the rise of commodity exchanges and commodities futures markets that emerged in the mid-1800s.  

이 부분에서 주목할 점은 “In addition”이라는 첨가의 코드가 있다는 점입니다.

-> 첨가의 코드의 특징 : 동사 관계는 같으나 대상이 무조건 달라야 한다.

그러므로 이 코드에 맞추어 위의 문장을 분석해보면,

this information(=to know the state of supply and demand in both)(원인)

->  (결과)

In addition(게다가)

상품 거래와 상품의 미래(또는 선물) 시장(원인) 

-> benefit(결과)

이런 구조가 성립이 되는데요, 이미 원인에 해당하는 대상이 서로 다른 상태이므로 결과 부분은 동사 구조가 같아야 하는 첨가의 코드 상 빈칸 답은 benefit이 되는 결론에 도달하게 됩니다. 그러므로 benefit과 같은 말 다른 표현인 profitability가 정답이 됩니다.

<두 번째 포인트>

It made sense for the grain trading companies to manage their risks within a single firm that was operating in more than one country, rather than operating as independent national companies trading with each other. Their access to information in multiple markets enabled them to easily cover the risks associated with agricultural commodity trade.

이 부분을 읽고 여러분이 결론을 내려야 할 독해의 포인트는

single firm이 multiple markets 관리 -> risk 쉽게 다룸 -> 이익 창출

이런 식으로 원인 결과 관계를 철저히 분석하면서 읽었는지가 중요한 포인트가 됩니다. 그렇다면 single은 결국 이익 창출을 일으킨 시작점(원인)이고 이익 창출은 그로 인한 궁극적인 결론(결과)이므로 글의 흐름상 “결과”가 들어가야 하는 빈칸에 single이라는 “원인”이 들어가는 논리적인 모순이 발생하므로 답이 될 수 없습니다. 

<세 번째 포인트>

첫 번째 포인트에 있던 문장을 해석하실 때, to(to는 뒤에 목적 나옴)와 from(from은 뒤에 원인 나옴)을 detail하게 해석하셨을까요? 제가 항상 강조하는 것이 요즘에는 원인 결과의 인과 관계까지도 글을 읽으면서 파악을 해야 수능에 대비할 수 있다는 점을 항상 얘기하는데 바뀌는 그러한 트렌드를 모르면 낭패를 볼 수도 있다는 점이 생각해 보셔야 할 부분인 것 같습니다.
