이보영 쌤의 첫 번째 칼럼 1. 예술지문은 비교, 대조, 변천사에 주목하자.

안녕하세요 이등급을 보장해주는 영어 이보영 쌤 입니다.

첫 칼럼 시작합니다. 

오늘은 수능에 많이 출제되는 theme 중에 예술에 대해 다뤄보겠습니다.


예술 지문은 크게

1. 예술에 대한 원론 (예술 그 자체에 대한 이론들) 

2. 예술의 하위분야인 음악, 미술, 문학

을 소재로 글이 전개됩니다. 


<1번 유형 사례들>

20년도 9평 39번

Representational theories of art treat the work of the artist as similar to that of the scientist.


19년도 9평 23번

The process of taste-making operated, then, to create hierarchical differences between the aesthete and the masses through the construction of aesthetic positions contrary to the perceived tasteless pleasures of the crowd.


18년도 9평 37번

Today the term artist is used to refer to a broad range of creative individuals across the globe from both past and present.


18년도 6평 41,42번

Since it is in the interests of certain social groups to define some things as ‘art’ and others as not, the very term ‘art’ itself cannot be uncritically used by the sociologist who wishes to understand how and why such labelling processes occur.

위 사례들을 보면 예술 지문이 수능 기출로 많이 나온다는 것을 확인할 수 있습니다. 

학생들을 대상으로 수능기출풀이를 하면서 비슷한 내용이 계속해서 나온다는 걸 알게 된 저는 기출문제들 사이의 공통점을 찾기 시작했고 한 가지 중대한 사실을 알게 되었습니다.


그것은 바로 



예술학 전공자가 아닌 수험생이 풀 수 있는 문제를 만들기 위해 출제위원들이  ‘비교, 대조, 변천사' 를 토대로 글을 전개한다는 것 입니다.’ (물론 직접 쓰기 보단 그러한 지문으로 문제를 만드는 것이겠죠.)



위의 사례들 중 대표적인 것들만 같이 보겠습니다. 


1번 유형 2017년도 9평 40번

In science one experiment, whether it succeeds or fails, is logically followed by another in a theoretically infinite progression. According to the underlying myth of modern science, this progression is always replacing the smaller knowledge of the past with the larger knowledge of the present, which will be replaced by the yet larger knowledge of the future. In the arts, by contrast, no limitless sequence of works is ever implied or looked for. No work of art is necessarily followed by a second work that is necessarily better. Given the methodologies of science, the law of gravity and the genome were bound to be discovered by somebody; the identity of the discoverer is incidental to the fact. But it appears that in the arts there are no second chances. We must assume that we had one chance each for The Divine Comedyand King Lear. If Dante and Shakespeare had died before they wrote those works, nobody ever would have written them.


과학은 과거의 작은 지식이 현대의 큰 지식으로, 더 나아가 미래의 더 큰 지식으로 대체되면서 진보한다는 통념이 깔려있습니다. 이와 달리 예술은 미래의 작품이 과거의 것보다 더 나은 것이라는 전제가 없죠. 

과학과 예술을 비교하며 글을 전개하고 있는 게 보여야 합니다. 



이제 20년도 9평 39번 문제를 보겠습니다.


39. 글의 흐름으로 보아, 주어진 문장이 들어가기에 가장 적절한 곳을 고르시오.

So, there was a social pressure for art to come up with some vocation that both distinguished it from science and, at the same time, made it equal in stature to science


Representational theories of art treat the work of the artist as similar to that of the scientist. Both, so to speak, are involved in describing the external world. ( ① ) But by the nineteenth century, any comparison between the scientist and the artist was bound to make the artist look like a poor relation in terms of making discoveries about the world or holding a mirror up to nature. ( ② ) Here, science clearly had the edge. ( ③ ) The notion that art specialized in the __EXPRESSION__ of the emotions was particularly attractive in this light. ( ④ ) It rendered unto science its own ― the exploration of the objective world ― while saving something comparably important for art to do ― to explore the inner world of feeling. ( ⑤ ) If science held the mirror up to nature, art turned a mirror at the self and its experiences.


처음 부분을 읽어보면 예술가와 과학자가 유사하다는 이론들이 있으며 두 학문 모두 외부 세계를 묘사하는 것과 관련 있다고 합니다. 하지만 19세기 이후로 과학이 해당 일을 더 잘하게 되었고 예술계는 과학과 같은 지위를 유지해야함과 동시에 과학과 구별되는 다른 일을 해야 한다는 사회적 압박을 받게 됩니다. 결국 예술계는 과학에 객관적 외부세계를 묘사하는 일을 맡겨두고, 인간 내면세계를 탐구하는 일을 함으로써 돌파구를 찾게 됩니다.


이번에도 과학과 예술을 비교하고 있습니다. 다만 전과 달리 다른 기준으로 비교하고 있죠. 


이제 19년도 수능 35번 문제를 보겠습니다. 


35. 다음 글에서 전체 흐름과 관계 없는 문장은?

When photography came along in the nineteenth century, painting was put in crisis. The photograph, it seemed, did the work of imitating nature better than the painter ever could. ① Some painters made practical use of the invention. ② There were Impressionist painters who used a photograph in place of the model or landscape they were painting. ③ But by and large, the photograph was a challenge to painting and was one cause of painting’s moving away from direct representation and reproduction to the abstract painting of the twentieth century. ④ Therefore, the painters of that century put more focus on expressing nature, people, and cities as they were in reality. ⑤ Since photographs did such a good job of representing things as they existed in the world, painters were freed to look inward and represent things as they were in their imagination, rendering emotion in the color, volume, line, and spatial configurations native to the painter’s art.


사진기의 도입으로 인해 인물과 풍경을 그리던 화가는 (생계에) 어려움을 겪게 되고,  인간 내면심리를 표현함으로써 돌파구를 마련했다는 내용입니다. 

바로 위의 지문과 굉장히 유사하지 않습니까? 과학 대신 사진기가 소재로 쓰였을 뿐입니다. 


이제 실전문제 풀이법을 알려드리겠습니다. 


지문에 art나 art의 하위범주인 music, painting 등이 소재로 나오면 차이가 두드러지게 나타나는 문장에 주목해야 합니다.  


차이점을 말하고 싶은 글을 쓸 때는 앞부분에 대상 간의 공통점을 쓰고 중, 후반부에 차이점을 설명하기 시작합니다. 그래서 예술파트 지문이 문제로 나온다면 지문의 앞부분에서 비교하고 있는 대상이 각각 무엇인지 정도만 찾은 다음 차이가 나타나는 부분부터 집중해서 읽으면 됩니다. 글의 순서나 문장삽입 유형으로 출제되면 해당 소재의 차이를 언급하기 위한 방향지시어 While, By contrast, Unlike, On the other hand 등에 집중하세요. 그럼 지문을 완벽하게 이해 못하더라도 문제는 풀 수 있을 겁니다.  


위의 내용들을 이해했다는는 전제로 기출 분석 방법을 알려드릴게요. 


19년 9평 23번 문제는 1950년 대 비평가들이 대중문화를 열등한 것으로 보고 그들 자신과의 구별을 한다는 점에 주목하세요. 그들은 예술에 상위등급과 하위등급이 있다는 가정하에 작품을 평가하는 경향이 있습니다. 

참고 지식: For much of modern civilization, people have sought to place different kinds of arts into an artificial hierarchy in which some forms of the arts are considered "better" than others. 


18년도 6평 41, 42번 문제는 art 라는 표현 대신 culture라는 표현을 써야하는 이유를 고민해보세요.


20년도 6평 36번 문제는 notation 관행 전과 후를 비교해보세요. 


이런 식으로 예술지문이 나온 기출문제들을 분석하다보면 앞으로 만나게 될 예술문제들도 겁내지 않고 잘 해결할 수 있을거에요.
