Language, when abstracted from its use, tempts us into philosophical confusion. We are led to believe that every word must correspond to a hidden object, that every proposition must reveal some metaphysical skeleton of the world. But this belief is itself a product of a bewitchment—of being captivated by the grammar of language rather than its function in life. A word’s meaning is not discovered by inward reflection or logical mapping, but by looking at how it is used within a form of life. In this regard, the philosopher’s task is not to advance new theories, but to bring words back from their metaphysical misuse to their everyday home. Thus, philosophical clarity begins when we refuse to accept __________.
