대성모의 영어 27번 문장 질문이요~

Question

If the dominant  individual in the relationship is smart, however, he or she will help reduce the cost of losing by making sure the subordinates gets something out of it - or by (avoiding/maintaining) the appearance that this is the case. 
이문장인데요 꽤나까다롭네요ㅜㅜㅋ
괄호에서 고르는 건데 정답은maintaining 입니다
그니까 지배적개체가 영리할때는 결정에서 발생하는 피지배개체에게 가해지는 부정적비용을 최소화하기위해 노력한다는 내용은 알겠는데 딱괄호문장과 뒤에 that this is the case(무슨 뜻이에요???)가 해석이안되서 이해가 안되네요 설명좀해주세요~~ㅎ

this is true란 뜻이죠

손해를 보는 일을 적게 만들거나, 아니면 손해를 보는 일이 적다고 주장하거나.(손해를 보는 일이 적은지 많은지는 모르지만 손해를 보는 일이 적은 것처럼 보이게 함)

피지배입장에서 loss가 적은듯한 appearance를 보여주는거죠 그렇다고 maintain하면서ㅎㅎ
똑똑한건지 영악한건지..
