2022 9평 영어로 보는 부정관사의 중요성(Feat: A turtle)

안녕하세요. "작까의 의도"라고 합니다.

오늘은 영어독해 시 부정관사 a/an의 중요성에 대해서 살펴볼텐데요.

잠시 부정관사(a/an) VS 정관사(the)의 차이를 살펴봅시다.

부정관사는 글을 쓴 작가(화자)는 알고 있고 글을 보고 있는 독자(청자)들은 모를 때 쓰는 단어 인데요.

정관사의 비교로 더욱 정확하게 개념을 잡아봅시다.

영화가 끝나고 흔히 "the end" 라는 문구가 나오면 정관사 "the"가 달린 걸 볼 수 있습니다.

이는 "시작과 끝"같은 개념들은 굳이 화자가 말해주지 않아도 청자인 우리는 알 수 있는 것이기 때문이겠죠?

그럼 작년 9평 영어 34번에 나오는 "A turtle"은 아시는 분 있으신가요?

글을 쓴 작가는 알고 우리는 몰랐죠? 그러니 "A turtle"인 겁니다.

이런 당연한 이야기를 왜 하는 거냐구요?

바로 부정관사(a/an)는 글을 읽는 우리가 모르는 개념 즉 작가가 소개하거나 앞선 문장에 대한 의문에 대답하려고 쓰는 개념이라는 것입니다.

바로 지문을 살펴보시죠.

34. Enabling animals to _______________________________ is an almost universal function of learning. Most animals innately avoid objects they have not previously encountered. Unfamiliar objects may be dangerous; treating them with caution has survival value. If persisted in, however, such careful behavior could interfere with feeding and other necessary activities to the extent that the benefit of caution would be lost. A turtle that withdraws into its shell at every puff of wind or whenever a cloud casts a shadow would never win races, not even with a lazy rabbit. To overcome this problem, almost all animals habituate to safe stimuli that occur frequently. Confronted by a strange object, an inexperienced animal may freeze or attempt to hide, but if nothing unpleasant happens, sooner or later it will continue its activity. The possibility also exists that an unfamiliar object may be useful, so if it poses no immediate threat, a closer inspection may be worthwhile.

여기서 이 부분을 살펴보면

갑자기 우리가 모르는 거북이가 등장합니다.

작가가 무언가 설명하려고 예시로 들었겠죠?

그럼 거북이로 설명하고 싶은 내용은 무엇이었을까요?

당연히 바로 앞 문장이었겠죠?

작가가 굳이 우리가 모르는 거북이를 소개해서 설명하는 내용은 당연히 중요하지 않을까요?

그리고 거북이는 토끼에게 이길 수 없는 사태가 발생합니다.

개인적으로 제가 토끼띠라........???

죄송합니다. 다시 본론으로 들어가면 거북이에게는 문제가 생겼습니다. 그리고 거북이 바로 앞에서 나온 문장이 바로

전반적인 그 문제에 대한 내용이죠.

그래서 거북이 앞에 나온 문장이 주제문이 되고 이 주제문에서 유발된 의문에 대한 대답이

To overcome this problem, almost all animals habituate to safe stimuli that occur frequently.

에서 나왔고 이 문장에서 나온 내용이 곧 = operate in the presence of harmless stimuli

이었습니다. 답이었지요!

제가 생각하는 수능영어풀이는 가장 당연한 것을 놓치지 않는 것이라고 생각합니다.
