The Westernized "developed" economies are,


by a very large margin, the largest markets


for prescription medicines.


It is, therefore, inevitable that any coverage


of biopharmaceutical industry will assume


that its research and development activities


are directed almost exclusively at these


affluent nations. The problem for millions


of people in the developing world is that


treatments for tropical diseases such as


malaria are not economical to develop and


that medicines for "Western" diseases are


too expensive.


This situation is now changing because of


economic, political and social factors,


including the rise of "venture philanthropy"


and new pricing models. Perhaps most


significantly, rapidly growing economies


(China, India and Brazil, for example) are


sustaining a large number of people with


Western lifestyles and the diseases to


match.


This may be one reason for an increased


willingness on the part of multinational


pharmaceutical companies to invest


heavily in research and development in


these countries and to offer generous


pricing models for drugs that treat


infectious diseases such as malaria.



서구화된 선진 국가들은 처방약에 대해 매우 큰 차이로


가장 큰 시장이다.


그러므로 바이오제약 산업에 관한 모든 보도가 그것의


연구 개발 활동이 거의 전적으로 이러한 부유한 국가들


을 겨냥하고 있다고 가정할 것이라는 것은 불가피하다.


개도국의 수백만 명의 사람들이 가진 문제는, 말라리아


와 같은 열대성 질환에 대한 치료제는 개발하기에 경


제적이지 않고 서양 질병에 대한 약은 너무 비싸다는


것이다.


이러한 상황은 벤처 자선 사업의 증가와 새로운 가격


결정 모형을 포함한 경제적, 정치적 그리고 사회적 요


인 때문에 이제 변하고 있다. 아마도 가장 중요하게는,


빠르게 성장하는 국가들 (예를 들어 중국, 인도, 브라질)


은 서구적 생활 방식과 그에 걸맞은 질병을 가진 많은


사람들을 살아가게 하고 있다는 것이다.


이것은 다국적 제약회사들이 이런 국가들에서 연구 개


발에 크게 투자하고, 말라리아와 같은 감염병을 치료


하는 의약품에 대해 후한 가격 결정 모형을 제시하려는


의향이 증가한 한 가지 이유일 수 있다.
