-If you are smart, you can understand it.

만약 네가 똑똑하다면, 너는 이것을 이해할 수 있을 텐데.

-If you were smart, you could understand it.

같은 현재인데 왜 2번은 are가 아닌 were, can이 아닌 could일까요?

    Not necessarily..

    1. Regarding your catchphrase :

We use if + past tense to indicate the situation described in the sentence will not happen at all => WRONG

We use this form to indicate that it will seem improbable.

For example, an educated child in an elemetary shcool might say :

"If I became a Nobel Prize Winner, I'd buy myself a nice new car."

Does this mean that he has a zero possibility to be a Nobel Prize Winner? Absoultetly not.

As some of you might have noticed, it brings up the sense of politeness.

Thus, we could use it to ask nicely.

e.x.) Would it be all right if I brought a friend?

    2. What about the famous if + will structure?

"I'll give you a dollar if it will make you go away."

"We'll go home now if it will make you feel better."

Could any of your students who firmly believe what you've taught guess the meaning of the sentence? I think not.

Wouldn't it be more normal to teach them about the usage of future tense when you've discussed the past and present?

    3. Besides these, we all know that there are so many important points in ifs.

"If + Should" could be a nice example : "Come to my office if it should make any problem."

This kind of structure appears a lot in exams.

In fact, there are tons that I haven't pointed out.

And I'm guessing that maybe you are aware of this fact.

If so, you are putting yourself into a deep self- contradiction.

You did not want to use "the famous three forms of ifs" because it might make students confused.

But it seems that your extremely-condensed version of ifs might bring more confusion to the students for the reasons listed above.

Maybe it will be better to just say that what you've taught are helpful notes in studying ifs, for their sake, don't you think?

    가정법의 ed와 과거의 ed
완료의 have p.p와 선시제표시인 have p.p 가 다른 장치인데
구별하지 않고 모두 다 시제로 설명하려하니까 이해가 잘 안 되는 것 같습니다.
    [해석이론 GK84] ´가정법 과거/과거완료´라는 용어는 불필요하다!
