 Language diversity all too often provides a convenient basis for marking differences among us. These differences provide a means for positioning people as being either superior or inferior. Once these differences are labeled, social rewards, privileges, and penies are easily justified by those who have the power to impose their own standards to others. These imposed standards are viewed as products validated on the purported basis of 'common sense' criteria. And it is tragic that we keep on imposing language standards and expectations on children. All children enter school with knowledge of the language of their homes and communities. When we ignore the knowledge that some children bring in favor of the knowledge that others have, we impose a criterion that renders a socially constructed minority being deficient, nonstandard or failing. No society, as linguistically and culturally as diverse as ours, would allow the asc/2ion of these labels to some of its children, unless                                                       .
